What is an Algor-Heuristic Lesson?
Many science lessons take a basic formula, or algorithm. They come with a recipe of instruction and leave little for the students to explore and experiment with.
A heuristic lesson is completely hands-on, minds-on and student-led without any instruction from a teacher. The algor-heuristic approach takes the fundamental objectives of the lesson and fuses it will a hands-on, sometimes messy, sometimes gross, 100% student engaging exploration.
These lessons are designed with the belief that students should play a role in their educational activities through problem-based inquiry. Algor-heuristic lessons challenge the students to probe, play, critically think, create and discover.
Here are some didactic lessons that I have transformed into more engaging, student-driven inquiry lessons.
